Published

The Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organisation – Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (VMRO-DPNME) coalition of Prime Minister Nicola Gruevski has won the snap general election.

The VMRO-DPNME took around 39% of the vote and about 55 of the 123 seats in the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia. Their main rivals, the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM) took 32% of the vote and 35 seats.

Turnout was slightly higher than in previous elections at 64% of the 1.8 million registered voters.

The VMRO-DPNME is expected to go into a coalition government with the largest of the Albanian parties, probably the Albanian Democratic Union for Integration (DUI).
