Tunisia

High turnout for registered voters

Published

Election officials have said that around 90% of the 4.1 million registered voters turned out to vote yesterday in their first free elections since independence.

There were a further 3.1 million Tunisians who had nor registered but who were still entitled to vote, there are, as yet, no figures available as to how many of them also voted.

Television coverage showed long queues outside polling stations which would suggest that voting was indeed heavy. Results will be announced on Tuesday, with the Islamist party Ennahda or Renaissance expected to be the largest party.
