Hong Kong legislative elections

Published

Hong Kong holds legislative elections today with around 3.5 million people eligible to vote.

The 5th Legislative Council will have 70 seats, 10 more than previously and 35 members will be elected in geographical constituencies in direct election whilst 35 are elected by functional constituencies.

Polling stations are open from 7.30 a.m. to 10.30 p.m. local time.

The elections come at a time when there is increasing anti-mainland feelings after the government tried to impose mandatory Chinese patriotism lessons in schools. Weeks of protest against the lessons which are seen by most parents as Communist propaganda achieved success yesterday when the government announced that the lessons would be optional.
