Islamist faces old regime in second round runoff


Ahmed Shafiq (Independent) a former prime minister in the dying days of the Mubarak regime and Mohamed Mursi (Freedom and Justice Party FJP) the Muslim Brotherhood’s candidate will face each other in a second round runoff on 16th and 17th June.

Although results are not yet official and some candidates are demanding recounts, the electoral commission has announced preliminary results with Mursi on 25.3%, Shafiq on 24.9% and third place candidate Hamdin Sabbahi (Dignity Party) with 21.5%.

Turnout was around 50%.
