Israel votes in local elections today

Published

Israelis are voting in municipal elections today to elect mayors and councillors for 191 municipalities. Voting takes place between 7 a.m. and 10 p.m. local time and the 5,469,041 eligible voters will be choosing from 767 mayoral candidates and 1,912 councillor candidates.

All the major parties are participating and it is expected that the results will give an indication as to the national trend. However, local elections are rarely high turnout events in Israel with most citizens thinking that local councils are corrupt according to a recent survey. Turnout in the 2008 local elections was just 51.58%.
