Italy votes in Municipal Elections

Italy’s Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, faces important local elections today which could see the Five Star Movement (M5S) seize important municipalities including Rome from the centre-left.

A total of 1,342 municipal councils and mayoralties are up for election today with a second round taking place on 19th June. Included in the elections are 26 new municipalities established in 2016 through the merger of a number of former municipalities. The Five Star Movement, a populist anti-establishment party led by comedian Beppe Grillo, is on course to get into the second round for the mayoralty of key towns including Rome, Bologna, Milan and Turin if opinion polls are to be believed.
