Iurie Leancă asked to form new Government

President Nicolae Timofti has appointed caretaker Prime Minister Iurie Leancă as candidate for the office of Prime Minister to form a new government following the general election on 30th November.

Iurie Leancă is the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova (PLDM) which won 23 of the 101 seats in the Parliament of Moldova. The PLDM has signed an agreement to form a minority government with the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) which has 19 seats. After more than 50 days of negotiations the PLDM were not able to come to agreement with the Liberal Party (PL) which has 13 seats and was part of the previous government.

The three parties hold a pro-European line whilst the two other parties in parliament, the Party of Socialists (PSRM) with 25 seats and the Party of Communists (PCRM) with 21 seats look towards Russia but cannot gain a majority in the new parliament.

Iurie Leancă has 15 days in which to form a government.
