Ivory Coast stalemate continues

Published

The stalemate continues in the Ivory Coast following the 28th November 2010 Presidential runoff between Alassane Ouattara (the internationally recognised winner of the election) and Laurent Gbagbo the incumbent President.

Following the election President Gbagbo refused to recognise the result and violence has escalated ever since. Senior Politicians from ECOWAS (Economic Community of West African States) have visited Gbagbo, but he refuses to stand down. Both the United Nations and ECOWAS states have suggested that it may be necessary to send in forces to enforce the result of the election.

Goodluck Jonathan the Nigerian President and current president of ECOWAS is due in Abidjan on Monday to try to bring an end to the deadlock.
