Jakarta mayor vote goes to second round

Joko Widodo of the Indonesian Democratic Party – Struggle (PDI-P) is the surprise winner of the first round of the Jakarta gubernatorial election.

Widodo took around 43% of the vote compared with the ruling Democratic Party (PD) candidate and incumbent Mayor, Fauzi Bowo who took around 33% of the vote. Fauzi had been expected to win in a first round vote, but there will now be a second round runoff on 20th September with Widodo seen as the favourite to pull off a surprise victory.

Official results for the first round will be announced on 20th July. Meanwhile both candidates will be working hard to woo the supporters of the other three candidates in the race, Hidayat Nur Wahid who took around 11%, Faisal Basri on 5%, Alex Noerdin with 4% and Hendarji Supanji with around 2%.

Voter turnout was around 64.5%.
