Kazakhstan to hold early election

President Nursultan Nazarbayev has indicated that he will call an early election after refusing to support a referendum that would have allowed him a third term in office.

The current rules allow for a President to stand for two terms only. The government had been pressing for a referendum to change this rule but the President indicated that he felt this would set a bad precedent for future generations.

The precise date of the election has still to be announced. The next scheduled election would have been in 2012.
