Keïta faces Cissé in presidential second round on 11th August

Published

The Mali presidential election will go to a second round to be held on 11th August after no candidate secured a majority.

Former Prime Minister Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta was the front runner by a long way, taking 39.23% of the vote. He will stand against a former finance minister Soumaïla Cissé who received 19.44% of the vote; no other candidate got more than 10% of the vote with most below 5%. The question remains as to how the votes of the remaining twenty-six candidates who stood in the first round will divide between the two remaining candidates, with the potential for a lot of behind the scenes trading about to take place over the next few days.

Turnout in the election was 51.54% much higher than in previous elections.
