Kirchner ally wins first of 22 contests

Published

Lucia Corpacci of President Cristina Kirchner’s Front for Victory (FpV) has won the Catamarca province governorship election. She defeated Eduardo Brizuela of the Civic and Social Front of Catamarca, the current governor, in a surprise result. The Civic and Social Front of Catamarca have held the governor’s house of the province since 1991.

Although described by analysts as of little relevance, this is the first of 22 provinces to hold elections this year with the congressional and presidential elections taking place in October. A win for the FpV is noteworthy because it was unexpected. A second election in Chubut province takes place next weekend (20th March 2011) and will be watched closely.
