Published

Malta’s Labour government has decided to nominate Minister for Family and Social Solidarity, Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, for the post of president. The president is appointed by a resolution of the House of Representatives for a five-year term and currently the Labour Party holds 39 of the 69 seats in the chamber.

Ms. Coleiro Preca will succeed incumbent President George Abela who was sworn in as president on 4 April 2009. She will be the second woman president of Malta after Agatha Barbara who was president from 1982 – 1987; she will also be the youngest at 55 years old.

The role of president is largely ceremonial.
