Labour wins by election

Published

The British Labour Party have won the Oldham East & Saddleworth by election.

The election which was called because sitting MP Phil Woolas was found guilty of election offences in last year’s general election was the first electoral¬†test for the Conservative/Liberal Democrat Coalition government.

The sitting MP had won the seat by just 103 votes last May and in normal circumstances the Liberal Democrats might have been expected to win the by election.  However, the Liberal Democrats have been criticised for going back on election pledges now that they are in government and this has gone down badly with many voters.

The Conservatives came a poor third in the by election.
