Legislative and municipal elections today

Published

A total of 4,564,969 voters will be eligible to vote for the 84 Deputies to the Legislative Assembly and 262 municipal councils today.

The 1148 polling stations will be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. local time and voters will be able to choose from nine parties, although only two parties, Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) and the National Republican Alliance (Arena) have put up a full slate of candidates.

In 2009 the FMLN took 35 of the 84 seats with 42.6% of the vote and the Arena took 32 seats with 38.55% of the vote. Three smaller parties took the balance of the seats. In January 2010, 12 Deputies left Arena and formed a new bloc in the Assembly called the Grand Alliance for National Unity (GANA).

Opinion polls suggest that the two main parties are neck and neck in this election and the result could be close.
