Lenín Moreno elected President of Ecuador


President Rafael Correa’s candidate Lenín Moreno has been declared the winner in last Sunday’s presidential election second round runoff.

Lenín Moreno of the left-wing PAIS Alliance took 51.15% of the vote according to preliminary results published by the electoral commission. His centre-right opponent Guillermo Lasso of Creating Opportunities (CREO) took 48.85%. Lasso is contesting the result. Turnout was 82.98% in a country where voting is compulsory.

If the result is confirmed then Lenín Moreno will be sworn in on 24th May.
