Rio Mayor Eduardo Paes has been re-elected in the first round of voting with an overwhelming majority. The Supreme Electoral Tribunal reports that Mr Paes of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (Partido do Movimento Democrático Brasileiro – PMDB) won 64.6% of the vote.

In the other big race in yesterday’s municipal elections the election for a new Mayor in São Paulo

José Serra of the Social Democratic Party (Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira – PSDB) a former Mayor of São Paulo (2005 – 2006) will face Fernando Haddad of the Workers’ Party (Partido dos Trabalhadores – PT) in the second round to take place on 28th October. Haddad stood down as the Minister of Education in President Dilma Rousseff’s Cabinet earlier this year to stand for the Mayoral position.

Elsewhere in the local elections the traditional parties appear to have upheld their positions with few major changes.
