Local elections conclude today

Published

Local elections in Italy conclude today at 1 p.m. local time with voting starting yesterday. The elections are taking place 942 city councils and include 26 mayorships. Around 9.5 million voters will be able to have their say in cities including Genoa, Palermo, Parma and Verona.

The elections are the first since the technocrat government of Mario Monti was installed nationally. In recent weeks there has been increasing resistance to the austerity measures and market reforms being introduced by the government.

These elections will test the parties supporting the government such as Silvio Berlusconi’s People of Freedom Party (PDL) their former partners in government the Northern League. It will also test left wing parties such as the Democratic Party which did well in local elections last year on the back of growing unpopularity for the then prime minister Berlusconi.

Runoff elections will be held on 20th and 21st May.
