Local elections results

Colombia held local elections yesterday with socialist and former guerrilla Gustavo Petro winning the mayoralty of Bogota the capital.

Petro took 32.16% of the vote and will take office on 1st January 2012. His closest rival Enrique PeƱalosa took 24.92% of the vote.

In Medellin, the second largest city, Anibal Gaviria of the Colombian Liberal Party won a closely fought contest, taking 37.65% of the vote. His closest rival, Luis Perez took 34.89%.

In Cali, the other major city, Rodrigo Guerrero an Independent with conservative backing won easily with 42.5%. His closest rival, Milton Castrillon, took just 19.48%.

Although the election campaign saw considerable violence, with 41 candidates assassinated, on polling day the elections were generally peaceful with only a few isolated incidents.
