Local elections today

Voters in 65 councils out of a total of 335 local authorities are voting today. Voting will take place across one municipal council, Kaduwela in the centre of the island, nine urban councils and 55 Pradeshiya Sabhas (like parish councils).

A total of 2,850,154 voters will vote at 2,226 polling stations from 7 a.m. local time. Observers are closely watching the vote in the Tamil dominated North of the country, including Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu, once the heartland of the Tamil Tigers or LTTE who were defeated in a thirty year long civil war in 2010.
