Albania

Local elections today

Published

Elections are taking place today across Albania for new Mayors and local councils. In total 3.1 million voters will be entitled to vote across 4,865 polling stations.

The campaign, which has been bad tempered and marred by violence between opposing gangs, will be the first electoral test of the main parties since the controversial 2009 general elections.

The battle will be between two main parties. Prime Minister Sali Berisha’s Democratic Party of Albania whose government has been marred by corruption allegations and who the Socialist opposition accuse of ‘stealing’ the 2009 election. And the Socialist Party of Albania led by Edi Rama who currently control the majority of the city councils in Albania.

The test will also be closely watched by the European Union as Albania seeks membership and the OSCE who have been critical of past elections.

Because of the campaign violence many observers believe that turnout will be low.
