Maldives crisis deepens

Published

Violent clashes between opposition supporters and police took place in the capital Male yesterday after incumbent president, Mohamed Waheed, said that he would remain in power until 16th November.

Waheed was due to complete the current presidential term at midnight today, but after the Supreme Court delayed the second round of voting in the presidential election to the 16th a constitutional vacuum was created. Originally the People’s Majlis (parliament) had voted to hand over the presidency to the Speaker, Abdulla Shahid, on 12th November on an interim basis in accordance with Article 124 of the Constitution. However, this decision was overruled by the Supreme Court.

Former president Mohamed Nasheed will face Abdulla Yameen in the runoff. Third placed candidate Gasim Ibrahim has said that he will not support either candidate.
