Mali goes to a second round for a new President today


The second round runoff of the presidential election takes place today in Mali. The contest is between former Prime Minister Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and a former Finance Minister Soumaïla Cissé.

Around 6.8 million voters will be voting in around 25,000 polling stations from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. local time.

The constitutional court confirmed on 1st August that Ibrahim Boubacar Keita had received 39.7% of the vote in the first round whilst Soumaïla Cissé had taken 19.7% of the vote with turnout at 48.9%. Maliweb is reporting that of the 26 candidates who were eliminated in the first round twenty are supporting Ibrahim Boubacar Keita and four are supporting Soumaïla Cissé with two candidates giving no guidance to their supporters.
