Martelly gains important boost

Published

Wyclef Jean has announced his support for Michel Martelly a candidate in the second round presidential runoff in Haiti.

Wyclef Jean, a Haitian born hip-hop star who is popular with the youth of Haiti, had hoped to stand for the presidential election himself but was barred from doing so last year. His support may give an additional boost to Martelly who is also known as ‘Sweet Mickey’.

Ex first lady Mirlande Manigat won the first round with around 34% of the vote. Whilst there was a dispute as to who came second between Jude Celestin of the ruling UNITE party and Michel Martelly. Celestin withdrew from the contest leaving the way free for Martelly.

The second round runoff takes place on 20th March 2011.
