Martelly officially president

The Provisional Electoral Council has finally confirmed that Michel Martelly was the winner of the presidential election, the second round of which took place on 20th March.

The final results were Michel Martelly 67.57% of the vote and Mirlande Manigat 31.74%.

Final results for the legislative elections have still not been released but we understand that the party of current president, René Préval, INITE has taken 46 of the 99 seats in the lower house Chamber of Deputies and 16 seats in the Senate.  Martelly’s party Repons Paysan has only three seats in the lower house.

The results of the legislative elections could decide just how difficult it will be for the new president to get anything agreed.  Martelly has said that education and re-housing the half a million people living in tents after last year’s earthquake are his priorities.
