Germany

Merkel likely to suffer further defeat today

Published

Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrat Union (CDU) is facing defeat in the Baden-Württemberg state election taking place today (Sunday 27th March 2011).

Opinion polls suggest that a coalition of Social Democrats and Greens will win the state with 48% of the vote, whilst Merkel’s CDU alliance will take around 43%.  The CDU have held the Baden-Württemberg state since 1953.

There is a further state election in Rhineland-Palatinate which is already held by the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

The loss of Baden-Württemberg will make it even harder for Angela Merkel to get legislation passed in the upper house or Bundesrat which represents German states.
