Published

The Saudi authorities have announced that, to date, more than one million of their citizens have registered to vote in the Saudi Municipal elections to take place on 22nd September this year.

The last elections were held in 2005 and new elections were scheduled to be held in October 2009 but were postponed.

Registration to vote closes on 19th May and candidate registration takes place between 28th May and 2nd June. Half of the seats in the 219 municipal councils are elected and half are appointed. Women are not allowed to vote. One change in the current elections is that the term in office has been changed from four years to six years.
