MPS wins comfortably

The party of President Idriss D├ęby, the Patriotic Salvation Movement (MPS), won the 13th February 2011 taking 133 of the 188 seats in the National Assembly. Turnout amongst the 4.8 million voters was 56.6%.

Sixteen other parties are said to have won one seat each. These are early first results and have yet to be confirmed by the constitutional council.

The last general election was in 2002 with opposition parties boycotting the 2006 presidential election. The next presidential election will be held on 8th May 2011.
