Mulatu Teshome Wirtu is new President

The Ethiopian parliament elected a new President of the Federal Democratic Republic yesterday.

The parliament which is controlled by the Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) with 546 of the 547 seats in parliament elected Dr. Mulatu Teshome Wirtu as its fourth president.

Mulatu is a 57 year-old economist who was previously the country’s Ambassador to Turkey, China and Japan and is a former Minister of Agriculture.

Incumbent president Girma Wolde-Giorgis has served for twelve years and was ineligible to stand for a further term.
