Municipal elections today

Published

More than 1.7 million eligible voters will vote today in local elections for 212 municipalities. There are 703 mayoral candidates and more than 23,000 candidates for the 3,400 seats on the councils. The 3,300 polling stations open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m.

In the 2010 local elections it was independents who took most seats although the Slovenian People’s Party (SLS) took 41 Mayoralties, the Slovenian Democratic Party (SDS) took 33, the Social Democrats (SD) won 20 and the Liberal Democrats took 13. The SLS lost all their parliamentary seats in the 13th July 2014 general election but are hoping to make a comeback in the local elections.
