Municipal elections today

Published

Elections take place today for mayors, deputy mayors and councilors in 5,566 municipalities across Brazil.

Around 138 million voters will choose from 480,000 candidates with all of the traditional parties standing alongside two newly registered parties, the Free Homeland Party (Partido Pátria Livre – PPL) and the Social Democratic Party (Partido Social Democrático – PSD).

These elections are the first to be held under a new “Clean Record” good-governance law which bars people convicted of a wide range of crimes from serving in political office.

The two biggest races are for the mayors of Rio de Janeiro and of Sao Paulo.
