Nauru’s Speaker dissolves parliament

Published

Ludwig Scotty, Nauru’s Speaker has dissolved parliament indefinitely, citing unruly behaviour by MPs as the reason. As a result an election is likely to be held within weeks, rather than the mid-year poll that had been expected.

There have been weeks of political turmoil within the government and three cabinet members resigned recently, leaving the government unable to function properly. In particular it has affected the processing of asylum seekers at the Australian detention centre on the island. Applications for up to 400 asylum seekers are likely to be delayed amidst calls for them to be processed in Australia like the majority of cases.
