New election dates

President Pierre Nkurunziza has signed a decree giving new dates for the General and Presidential elections.

The decree, which was signed on Tuesday, pushes the General election back from its original date of 5th June to 29th June.

The Presidential election, which was to be held on 26th June, will now be held on 15th July.

Senatorial elections have been moved back one week to 24th July.

The opposition has rejected the new dates and says that the electoral commission, which saw two of the five commissioners resign last week, is not capable of carrying out its functions.

Protests against the President standing for a third term which started on 26th April are continuing and so far around 30 people have died with more than 100,000 people fleeing the country.
