Egypt

New election dates

Published

The Egyptian authorities have come out with fresh dates for parliamentary elections. The latest dates given are said to have been issued by Field Marshal Tantawi, the head of the Supreme Military Council.

The People’s Assembly has now been reduced to 498 seats from 508 and elections will start on 28th November and continue over three rounds. The other two rounds will be held on 14th December and 3rd January.

Two thirds of the seats will be elected by proportional representation and one third by a simple majority (i.e. FPTP), the latter of which have to be independents and cannot be from a political party. Opponents say that this opens the way for ex Mubarak supporters to return to parliament.

Senate elections will now be held between 29th January and 11th March.
