New PM appointed

President Bashir al-Assad has appointed ex agriculture minister Adel Safar to head a new government as prime minister.

The president also confirmed that he plans to set up a committee to review the emergency law and replace it with anti-terrorism legislation as well as addressing Kurdish grievances in the north east of the country.

The Prime Minister and government hold few legislative powers, which reside with the president.
