New polls on 9th October

Haiti is going to try again to elect a new President. Interim President Jocelerme Privert announced yesterday that the country’s 5.8 million voters will go to the polls on 9th October.

The new elections will begin with a rerun of the presidential first round which took place last October and featured 27 candidates. Elections for part of the Senate (10 seats) will also take place. It is unclear where the approximately $55 million needed to run the election will be found. There is also some question over the legitimacy of the decree since the interim president’s term of office ran out several months ago.
