New president in East Timor

Published

Preliminary results suggest that Taur Matan Ruak will be named East Timor’s new president. The former guerilla fighter received around 61% in Monday’s second round runoff, whilst Francisco “Lu Olo” Guterres received around 38%. Ruak ran as an independent, but was backed by Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao, himself a former president.

Parliamentary elections will take place on 7th July and if these are also peaceful, it may signal the withdrawal of peacekeeping forces.
