New president passes first electoral test

Published

President Mohamed Waheed, the new president of the Maldives who took over from Mohamed Nasheed after he resigned (he says forcibly) has faced his first electoral test and won.

The president did not put up candidates of his own, but he did endorse two candidates in two by-elections put up by his coalition government’s partners, Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and Jumhoory Party (JP); both won.

The result, however, will not prevent continuing difficulties in the parliament where the parties are evenly split.
