New President to be elected today

Vanuatu will get a new President today. There are 23 candidates standing for the post of President, which will be decided in an indirect election. The Electoral College consists of 52 members of the country’s parliament and the six provincial government presidents.

The winning candidate is required to receive support from 38 members in order to be elected. This means that the vote could go through to three or four rounds before a candidate is elected.

The Speaker of the Parliament, Philip Boedoro, is acting President until a new President is elected. Vanuatu has around 250,000 population.
