Niinisto wins second round vote

Sauli Niinisto, the National Coalition Party (KOK) candidate has won the second round of the presidential election. Niinisto (63) beat the Green League (VL) candidate, Pekka Haavisto by 63% to 37% of the vote.

The result is the firt time that the National Coalition Party candidate has won the presidency since 1956. Tarja Halonen the current president has completed her two terms and is the third consecutive president from the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Niinisto entered parliament in 1987. He was Justice Minister from 1995 – 1996, then Finance Minister from 1996 – 2003 when he took Finland into the Euro. He was also Deputy Prime Minister from 1995 – 2001 and Speaker of Parliament from 2007 – 2011.

The role of president is very much as brand ambassador for Finland, although he does have some duties in non EU foreign affairs.
