Nominations close for election

Published

Nominations have closed for the 11th October presidential and legislative elections.

In total there are 16 candidates for the presidential post with incumbent president, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, standing again.

Half of the thirty seats in the upper house, the Senate, are up for election and 99 candidates have put their names forward for the 15 seats.

In the lower house, the House of Representatives, there are 64 seats and at the last count around 760 candidates standing.

Although there was a referendum on 23rd August to make four constitutional changes affecting elections, all four questions were rejected.

Liberia has an arrangement whereby there is a runoff if any candidate fails to get 50%+ of the vote, in such instances this year the second round runoff will take place on 8th November.
