Nominations close for March election

Nominations have closed for the legislative elections scheduled for 2nd March. The total number of candidates registering is 5,283 of which 390 are women. This number is up from 4500 candidates in 2008.

Candidates are standing for the National Consultative Assembly of Iran which will have 310 seats, up from 290 in 2008.

The reformist movement in Iran has said that it will boycott the elections with former president Sayyid Mohammad Khātamī saying that all political prisoners must be freed before they will participate.
