Published

The opposition centre-right New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made a clean sweep in last Wednesday’s general election.

The NPP presidential candidate, Nana Akufo-Addo, beat incumbent President John Dramani Mahama of the centre-left National Democratic Congress (NDC) by 53.85% to 44.40% despite opinion polls suggesting the NDC would retain power.

In the parliamentary election a number of the 275 seats remain to make announcements, but so far the NPP have won 153 seats whilst the NDC took 84 seats with 138 seats needed for a majority.

Nana Akufo-Addo will be sworn in on 7th January 2017. GhanaWeb reports that a transition team will start work on the handover of power from today (Sunday 11th December 2016).
