Nur Otan win

As expected the ruling party of Kazakhstan, Nur Otan have maintained a significant hold on the Majlis or lower house in yesterday’s general election.

Preliminary figures from the Central Election Commission (CEC) give Nur Otan 80.74% of the vote.

For the first time two other parties have managed to surpass the 7% limit to obtain seats in the parliament. The business friendly Ak Zhol took 7.46% of the vote and will be entitled to a small number of seats, as will the Communist Party which took 7.2% of the vote.

The final results are expected to be published before 22nd January.
