Obama wins a second term

Published

Barack Obama has won a second term as President of the United States of America.

Following a hectic day of polling yesterday which has only just concluded in Alaska, the last state to vote, it became clear in the early evening that Obama’s Republican rival, Mitt Romney, had not won enough of the battleground seats to ensure a victory.

By late night Obama had won sufficient of the eastern battleground states to secure 275 votes, five more than is needed even though voting hadn’t concluded in the western states. Mitt Romney conceded defeat early this morning and rang to congratulate his rival.

Early results suggest that the Democrats may have retained their control of the Senate but that the Republicans have control of the House of Representatives.
