One minister out and one to follow

Published

The Minister of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Virbhadra Singh, has resigned over corruption charges.

Singh, when he was Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh in 1989, is accused of misusing his office and granting favours to industrialists; he denies the charges.

The Finance Minister, Pranab Mukherjee, is also expected to resign this afternoon. The reason, however, is somewhat different. He has become the presidential candidate for the Congress led ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in the election to take place on 19th July. Presidential candidates are not permitted to hold any office in government or a party and therefore he is expected to resign from the Indian National Congress (INC) this afternoon as well.
