Around 3,988,000 people will be entitled to vote in the general election taking place in Laos today. There are about 211 candidates for the national parliament who have been approved although Laos is a communist state with one legal party, the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party (LPRP).

There are 149 seats to be elected in this election to the National Assembly. The National Assembly is largely a rubber stamping body, although they have criticised the government in the past.

Voting will also take place for the 360 members of the newly created Provincial and Vientiane Capital People’s Councils with people choosing from 508 candidates.

There are 6,571 polling stations open across the country from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time.
