Ortega candidacy challenged

Published

The Liberal Constitutional party has appealed to the Supreme Electoral Court to ban President Deniel Ortega from standing in the presidential election slated for 5th November 2011.

The opposition party says that the constitution bans consecutive elections of the president. Ortega was president between 1979 – 1985 and was elected for his current term in 2006.

However, a 2009 ruling from the Supreme Court overturned the requirements of the constitution and Ortega declared his candidacy based upon this ruling.
