Ortega expected to win today’s poll

The 3.4 million electors in today’s presidential and legislative elections are expected to return incumbent Daniel Ortega to office.

The elections held today are for the president, vice-president, 90 deputies to the National Assembly and 20 representatives to the Central American Parliament. There are 12,960 polling stations which will open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Altogether, five candidates are standing for president. Recent opinion polls give Daniel Ortega of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLD) around 48% of the vote. His closest rival is Fabio Gadea of the Liberal Independent Party (PLI) is on 30% and the third closest candidate, Arnoldo Alemán of the Constitutional Liberal Party is on 10%.
