Otto Perez Molina wins

Published

The Patriotic Party (PP) candidate and hard line ex general Otto Pérez Molina has won the presidential election in the second round runoff.

With 98% of the ballots counted Pérez has taken 54% of the vote with his rival Manuel Baldizón of the Independent Block Renewed Democratic Freedom Party (LIDER) taking 46%.

Turnout was reported to be low, partly as a result of security fears in a country where violence has been on the increase for a number of years. Pérez has promised to rule with an iron fist and has said that he will use elite army squads to deal with drugs cartels and organised crime.

He will take over from President Álvaro Colom on 14th January 2012.
